Help Your Dog Fight Summertime Pests

In many parts of the country fleas and ticks are
a serious problem for pet owners. In the warm
wet summer months these parasites can become
very prolific while feeding off of your animals.
That's right, it may sound quite gross, but these
little bugs attached to your dogs and cats for
the purpose of sucking their blood.

Not only are they quite annoying to the animals,
if the fleas are brought into the home they can
begin multiplying inside. It can be quite
difficult to eradicate these pests from your
house. It's far better to prevent your dogs from
being infested with these insects in the first
place. There are a number of products on the
market which are quite reliable in preventing
any flea and tick problems for your pets during
the summer months.

In times past flea and tick collars were very
common and were used somewhat effectively to
control the problem. However, nowadays most
veterinarians suggest a topical liquid is
applied directly to the dog's skin. Although the
amount applies is extremely small, the flea and
tick medicine is quite effective in not only
removing attached ticks and fleas that the dog
already has but it's also quite reliable in
preventing any more problems for the canine in
the coming month or two.

Normally, even in heavily infested areas where
fleas and ticks are prevalent, this highly
effective treatment for the pests only needs to
be applied three or four times per summer at the
most. In many cases, only two or three
applications are required for total control of
the parasites during the entire summer.

Always consult with your veterinarian before
using these products on your older pets. Old
dogs and cats may be more susceptible to
reactions from the strong medicine which soaks
into their skin. It's advisable when first
giving your animals their dose to split the dose
into two applications at least several hours
apart so that if there are any reactions you can
observe them with out giving the animal the
entire dose.

Your veterinarian normally has in stock these
flea and tick medicines. You can also check
online for Internet based retailers who stock
pet supplies. Oftentimes their prices are
somewhat lower than those found at local vet
offices. Of course always check before ordering
about shipping charges is that could add to the
price and thus make your veterinarian the better
choice for purchasing the products.
