Handling Submissive Dog Urination 101

By Dirk Gruenberg

It is not an easy task to handle submissive dogs. In order to avoid submissive urination the best thing you can do is to make your dog feel more confident. Simply learn how to train submissive dogs.

It is a good idea finding out what your dog's body language is all about, because your dog can show his submission in a lot of different ways. Some dogs lay back their ears, others will have their tail between their legs.

A lot of people think their dog urinates in front of them intentionally. But this is not what submissive urination is all about. This is something you should be aware of.

Some do not understand that submissive urination cannot be controlled by their dog and therefore think their dog urinates to make them angry. This is not the case and instead of yelling at your dog you should help him to get rid of this problem.

Be gentle with your dog. For example, you could pet him under his chin. Looking directly into his eyes in this case is not a good idea. Also you should do everything preventing your dog from becoming excited.

Submissive dogs urinate when they are excited too. When you come back home, you should first wait for your dog to calm down. You can then welcome him after he has called down.

What you want to do is to spend time with your dog. Maybe you play with him or do any kind of outdoor exercise. Do everything that increases the level of confidence in your dog.

Having fun with your dog is always a good idea. But still: Submissive dog training is always a challenge that can only be met by a patient dog owner.

Persistency is the key. Avoid anything your dog could interpret as being aggressive. Give your dog a lot of confidence instead. This is what can stop submissive urination. Again: Be patient, be persistent, and avoid excitement and aggressiveness. This is what your dog will appreciate.
