Training Your Dog With A Backpack

There are several reasons you may want to train
your dog had to carry a backpack. Leader not
there are backpacks available that fit all sizes
of dogs. One reason for using these of course is
to have the dog carry some items for you what
going on a walk or hike. For example, they even
make collapsible dog bowls that can fit into the
pack along with a bottle of water. The dog
therefore carries his or her own water supply
while on the hike.

Just like with putting a saddle on a horse for
the first time your dog will balk at the
prospect of having the unfamiliar item on her or
his back. He or she may twist around and bite at
the pack or even roll on the ground trying to
get it off. It's best to have your dog on the
leash the first time you placed the pack on them
in order to immediately take off on a walk in
order to distract the dog from trying to remove
it.

Always think about weight ratios when putting
items into the backpack. In other words, if your
dog only ways for your 50 pounds, putting 10
pounds of items into the pack would be a
significant burden on the dog. If your dog is
used walking for 5 miles with you without a pack
do not expect them to walk more than a few miles
the first couple of times that you use a
weighted backpack on them.

Just like with humans, added stress on the
joints can lead to injuries in the dogs joints
and muscles. You need to break your dog in
slowly and easily with carry the extra weight in
order that he or she can adjust to the added
stress without causing injuries. It's best just
to put a few items onto your dogs back in the
beginning. Actually just the weight of the pack
itself is enough to begin training the dog to
accept the item while taking walks.

Other reasons for using a backpack on your
canine is to subdue their behavior. For example,
if your dog is aggressive around other dogs or
two rambunctious for his or her own good and
gets excited to easily, a backpack acts as a
natural distraction to the dog and thus subdues
his or her behavior. This can be a very handy
item when training a dog to become more social
around other canines.

Training your dog had to carry a backpack can be
handy in several situations such as caring extra
items for the dog himself, items you may need to
take along on the hike, and for purposes used to
calm the dog down.
