Using Treats to Train Your Canine

No matter what you want to train your dog to do
one of the easiest ways to achieve your desired
goals is to use some type of food or treat to
reward the dog for doing the desired behavior.
The quickest way to teach a dog what you want
him or her to do is by using positive
reinforcement which is provided with a treat.

One of my favorite treats to train my dogs with
is simply cheese puff snacks which can be
purchased at any grocery store in large
quantities for low prices. These come in generic
brands and more pricey brands. I have found,
fortunately that my dogs tend to prefer the
generic brands versus the more expensive named
brands. In fact, just the other day, my wife
purchased the more expensive kind for the treats
and I gave my dog one of those in his first
response was to spit it out.

These cheese puff treats usually come in pieces
several inches long. Before going out for a
training session with my dog I usually break
these pieces in halves and use these pieces for
the training. No matter what you want your dog
to do, when he performs well simply pull one of
the treats from your pocket and give it to him
or her.

One issue with these cheese puff snacks is that
they are easily broken and you need to wear a
loose fitting sweatshirt or sweatpants without
tight pockets. Otherwise, the cheese puffs tend
to disintegrate in tightfitting pockets and thus
causing a significant mess.

One trick with using the snacks to cause the
action you desire in your dog is to do the
training sessions later that day and your dog
becomes more hungry. The hungrier your canine is
more responsive she or he will be to the positive
reinforcement snacks provide. Of course if your
dog becomes too hungry, his hunger may be a
distraction that prevents you from performing
the training session desired.

One example for using the treats to train to
specific action is when training the dog to sit.
Then your dog on leash walking in and come to a
complete stop you while saying the words fit in
a firm manner gently push your dogs rear until
he performs the action of sitting. Immediately
praise him with words and also give his ears a
scratch while pulling from your pocket one of
the cheese snacks and offer it to her. Repeat
this process for five times in a row during this
training session. Do not overdo it. Do this
repeatedly for for five days in a row and your
dog will sit on command almost guaranteed.
