Essential Information About French Poodle Dogs

By Pierre Fontaine

The French bull dog and the French poodle seem lovely, yet give a sense of pride for their owners with plenty qualities to boast about. Though many trace the origin of the French poodles to France, a few people consider that they might have originated either in Russia or Iberia. Notwithstanding the origin, the people of France decided to elaborate the breed to bring the most recent variant that exists today.

The name Poodle is a derivative of the German "Pudel" which is a short form of "Pudelhund" meaning "water Dog". The French Poodle was initially used as a gun-dog for retrieving waterfowl, an association with water that most likely led to its German name.

The French Poodle is in fact, full and thick coated but hunters clipped the dog's thick coat to help him swim, leaving hair on the leg joints to shield them from extreme cold and sharp reeds. This clipping caught on as a signature characteristic for the French Poodle though the style of the clipping largely depends upon the master which range from the positively beautiful to the downright bizarre, based upon the owner's and the viewers viewpoint.

One man's meat is another man's poison - beauty is in the eyes of the beholder; so the sayings go. The normal methods of clipping are the "Pet", the "English Saddle" and the "Continental". Only these types of clipping are acceptable in shows.

The Toy, the Miniature and the Standard are the three common breeds of the French poodle. The height of the adult's shoulder is the only feature that can be used to differentiate them. They are bred in a variety of colors such as apricot, white, black, blue/charcoal. The French poodle which possesses more than one color or varying shades of colors does not find recognition in the American Kennel Club.

The presence of distinct features is an exclusive quality of the French poodles and they make them easily recognizable. The Standard breed of the French poodle is higher than 15 inches, whereas the Toy breed is smaller than 10 inches. The Miniature breed has an intermediate height ranging from 10 to 15 inches. The French poodle has quite a lengthy body, with ears that are flat and long. With deep-looking eyes, that are either black or brown, they go about in an upright and dignified manner.

Similar in nature to the Blue French bulldog, the French poodle is a fun-loving and amusing dog with an exceptional intelligence. Additionally, it has a remarkable sensitivity. It has a tendency to obey and remain submissive and therefore can learn tricky actions easily. Therefore, the French poodle is well-liked in circuses exhibiting a magnificent and splendid display of actions as a star performer. Lots of people who own this dog claim that it is capable of perceiving the meaning of our speech.

French poodles are loyal and friendly with the people in the family that owns them, regardless of their ages. It also expresses frustrations when it feels ignored. It is highly protective by nature and therefore serves as an excellent guard.

For the French Poodle, being active is an absolute must, with a necessary daily walk. They enjoy a good frolic in open spaces, are exceptionally fond of water, true to its derived name. Grooming is also another must. Usually the "lamb" clipping, bringing the coat to look rather like a lamb is preferred since it is easier and cheaper to maintain instead of the more fancier ones that require the assistance of an outsider. On the whole, the French Poodle is an adorable dog that can be reared for its versatility.
