4 Pointers When Feeding Discus Fish

You cannot just decide feeding discus fish any
kind of fish food once you get it. The discus
fish is very picky and have the tendency to
stick to the diet that they have been accustomed
with. The best thing to do is to ask what was the
previous food given to them at the time that you
purchased them and continue providing this item.

Feeding discus fish issues would also need to
consider the length of the fish. If it is around
5cm length, then you would need to give them
nourishment for 5 times a day while the older
fish can be fed just twice a day. This is
because the smaller fishes would require more
nutrients than the older ones—the older,
the lesser the food. You would want to avoid
overfeeding them because this is more harmful to
their health.

Another way to make sure that they would be in
the best of health is to add live or frozen food
when feeding discus fish. They are carnivorous
and would need a high protein intake in order to
stay healthy and strong. When feeding discus
fish, you can try giving them frozen brine
shrimp or bloodworms. You can give it frozen or
alive and observe which they do prefer. Provide
them with small amount of food at first and then
allow them to eat for 2 hours. They would nibble
slowly and then remove the excess food in the
tank to avoid it from rotting and contaminating
the fish.

You can also try providing them with pellet
foods because many varieties of discus fish love
it. By feeding them pellets, you can help them
become more colorful as well as provide them
with much needed nutrients that are not yet
found in other foods like worms.

In the normal setting, there are times when the
discus fish would not eat for one day. So, you
can try not providing them food for one full day
and resume feeding discus fish the next day to
simulate the actual feeding habits in the wild.
This could be a good training for them but this
is optional. You have to be careful with the
kind of food that you will be providing when
feeding discus fish. This would protect them
from diseases. You likewise need to be mindful
not to leave them unfed or over feed for several
days as this will surely affect their health.
