Describing Chinese Hamsters, its Behavior, and the Fundamental Care it Need

By Liz Andrews

Among all hamster types in the pet industry, the Chinese hamster is deemed to be the rarest. This type of hamster, which was originally found in the desserts of Northern China and Mongolia, was formerly bred as laboratory animals until mice and rats replaced them. Since then, they have been marketed in the pet industry. Their fame still has to grow, and to know some data about them could help in your decision if you are thinking to grow one in your home.

Their specie can be distinguished in three color mutations. These are the Normal/Wild type, Dominant Spot type, and the Black Eyed White type. The Normal type mainly comprises a natural brown coat color with a black dorsal stripe. While Dominant Spot of color mutation includes a white coat with colored patches. Black Eyed White type of hamsters is dominantly white in color. This type is the rarest of the three, and only a few hobbyists raise them.

Another attribute that sets this hamster apart from other dwarf hamsters is its tail. Unlike the Russian Dwarf Hamsters, Chinese Hamsters have a tail that can grow up to an inch. This gives them a similar representation to rats and mice. Chinese Hamsters are also minute. They can only extendup to a maximum of four inches.

Their behavior is not that problematic. In general, these creatures are shy and well-mannered. They like to stay awake at night, and seldom do they show activity during daylight. Though they can be incited at times, it is advised to tame them when they're still young. They also enjoy to move around, so having larger space in their housing would do them good.

When it comes to sociability, they can be kind with other hamsters if placed in a cage together. I suggest that you do this in their early years, which will give them enough time to get along. But there would be some Chinese Hamsters that would rather want to be isolated. If you detect any fighting in the cage, it is better that you get the violent hamster and house it in a different cage.

In raising this kind of hamster, it is very vital that you attend to its needs. Providing appropriate care is crucial. Always make sure that it has a fresh cage. Wire cages are not advised for this type of hamster. They are miniture and agile and that they can easily escape through the wires. Glass aquariums are superior preferences for your pet than wire cages. When it comes to its diet, never forget to give your hamster with fresh food and water. Don't just settle for the hamster food sold in pet stores. Try blending fresh fruits and vegetables to its diet. Water should also be replaced day-to-day. Cleaning its habitat is also highly significant, as this keeps the well-being of your hamster.

Always make sure that you deal with your Chinese Hamster well. Its basic needs are more or less similar with other types of dwarf hamster. It is not that difficult to take care of them, as long as you provide the proper housing, food, and maintenance. By doing this, you will surely keep your pet delighted and fulfilled for many years.
