How to Stop A Dog From Barking
Barking dogs can be extremely annoying at tims,
especially when trying to go to sleep at night.
If you own outside dogs who have a bad habit of
barking constantly during the day and especially
at night, we offer tips and suggestions here for
dealing with the annoyance.
We suggest you consider this article for adult
dogs only. Puppies have their own set of issues,
such as separation anxiety when they're younger
and especially just having been weaned. Adult
dogs have simply developed a bad habit and been
allowed to continue it. For the most part, dogs
tend to bark a lot whether it be at the wind, or
people they see or hear walking down the street.
Possibly they are quite bored with their lives.
One of the best cures for the problem of
barking, and other issues also, is making sure
the dog gets plenty of exercise. Believe it or
not, exercise can quiet a dog's mind and allow
him or her to better focus inwardly without
being constantly agitated by outside influences.
That being said, plenty of exercise alone is
often not enough to stop the annoying barking.
Maybe you have tried simply yelling at your dog
out the back door every time he or she barks for
unacceptable reasons. If so, you probably realize
already that this method usually doesn't work.
One method I have found that works well for some
dogs is to simply have a rolled up newspaper by
the door and when the dog barks instantly open
the door, walk out and aggressively smack the
paper in your hands while scolding the older
dog. There is no need, nor is it advisable, to
swat the dog with the paper.
Different dogs have different personalities and
some of them can easily be trained to stop the
barking with the simple scolding the newspaper
provides. Other dogs are more strong-willed. For
those dogs who live in cities and the barking
becomes a legal issue, pet owners may have to
resort to what are called 'bark collars'. These
collars fit around the dog's neck just as a
conventional collar, but they have a device that
fits snugly against the dog's neck and provides a
bit of a buzz when the dog barks. The buzz is an
extremely mild shock that does not hurt the dog
at all but simply diverts the dog's attention.
The buzz has been described by some as a means
of distracting and annoying the dog, much the
same as a buzzing fly would.
These bark collars, although not inexpensive,
work in almost all circumstances for stopping
the dog from barking. Once the barking has
ceased while using the collar, which usually
takes several weeks, the collars do not have to
be worn everyday. They do have to be worn every
once in a while to remind the dog that barking
is not allowed. Of course, these collars are
usually the last resort for stopping dog
barking, but where there is the threat of strict
city ordinances, pet owners must take extreme
measures.
