Setting Up Your Customized Aquarium - Golden Rules

By Daniel Turbin

When creating your custom aquarium you should follow a few golden rules. It is very simple to ruin your own hard work by trying to take short cuts. For instance the most common ways of harming your new aquarium is by putting plants that haven't been appropriately rinsed.

Taking possession of your very first fish is a fun filled time but you might cause him stress if you do not be mindful when transporting him from the store to your new fish tank. You cannot simply dump him into the brand new fish tank. If transporting in a plastic bag, let the bag float in the aquarium so that the hot and cold levels inside and out can equalize. A few people will suggest adding some of the aquarium water into the bag so that the fish could get used to the new water.

Marine fish are quite sensitive to light so it may be a good idea to subdue the lighting effects when putting them into their brand new custom aquarium. If you are adding a new fish to a fish tank that is already populated, it is wise to keep the new fish separate for about two weeks. Thus giving enough time for symptoms of any diseases he might be carrying to manifest themselves.

You may be amazed to know that in addition to your custom aquarium it's also advisable to purchase a small separate fish tank. This will act as your hospital fish tank as well as being the place to house any new fish for the settling period before adding them to your existing fish tank. These precautions are there to protect your fish from illness.

Understand that your expenditure in any fish is pointless if they are all dead. Unfortunately given the enclosed habitat, disease can spread rapidly and therefore these precautions are not just essential but must be considered significant.
