Introduction To Turtles And Proper Pet Turtle Care

By Dudley Goblirsch

Youngsters take delight in turtles as being pets. Along with a number of species, they are quite interesting animals . Should you wish to have a turtle as a pet, you must first know its exact type in order for you to give it proper care.

There are two types of turtles that you can own and put in turtle tanks - the terrestrial type and the aquatic type. The first turtle type spends more time on land while the aquatic one wants to bathe in water quite often. Box and mud turtles are the terrestrial turtles. They require dry land to hibernate in night time and sunshine during the day. Terrestrial turtles also need water not only to drink, but also to swim around in.

Aquatic varieties are categorized into sliders and painted turtles. Sliders generally stay in swampy or muddy regions. They have a tendency to bathe under the sun in daytime and also swim in water to cool down. The painted turtle, just like the slider is mainly aquatic, so it devotes more time in water than being out in the sun. Furthermore, the painted turtle is the most difficult to look after due to its special care needs.

Once you have decided on the type of turtle you wish to have, you will then need to know the sizes of turtle tanks. Most turtles require a 40-gallon tank to have room for land and water. You will want to have plants in the tank, but make sure that they are not toxic to the turtle. They typically eat what they see as edible.

Turtles can certainly make wonderful pets if you know a bit about their environment. Consider turtle tanks as your pet's dwelling and select the most suitable one. Remember that they are generally delicate, thus try to refrain from routinely holding them. They certainly do have to hibernate in order to live a longer life. When they do, you can keep them far from little ones so they will not be upset.
