How to overcome distraction while training your dog
A distracted dog may cause a tricky daily walk. By teaching your dog to be relaxed around new things you can achieve a simpler time when out walking him. Dogs, people, vehicles and bikes are among some of the things that distract dogs while out and about. The interesting news is that most distracted behavior can be changed by following the same process for each.
The final aim with a distracted dog is to urge that he looks at you where he would routinely lose interest in you utterly. You can encourage and bolster this look with positive canine obedience training.
To train your dog to look immediately at you, simply reinforce it when he does it naturally. This can be done with either a praise word or clicker followed by a tiny and tasty treat. Begin in an area of low distraction and when he's constantly taking a look at you introduce a cue word as his eyes reach your face. Something simple will do, "focus" or similar. You'll quickly be in a position to incite the look by bringing the cue word forward steadily.
When your dog looks at you on command you are ready to move into areas with more distractions. Take things at your dog's pace and only introduce the distractions that you believe he can handle. You can gradually build him up to having a look at you when asked to in all scenarios.
Whilst out dog walking on the leash, it is critical to help a relaxed state in your dog. If he attempts to greet other dogs or folk when he is over excited then he is going to see the excitement as rewarding. If he does try to jump up when greeting simply don't permit him to greet. Move back and create space between you and ask for his attention, then only as he relaxes move closer so that he is able to greet. This could need repeating a lot initially but with consistency it should be habit within a week or two.
