Fluffy Maltese Puppies Grow Into Playful, Loyal Companions

By Stephanie Skinner

If you are in the market for a small dog, it is wise to do some research first. If you decide on Maltese puppies Boston breeders will have a selection to choose from. This breed is happy and devoted and will cope well if its living conditions are somewhat constricted.

Because the Maltese is so popular, there are many unscrupulous breeders who do not pay sufficient attention to their breeding stock. Buy your puppy from a reputable breeder. He will have vetted the parents for any genetic problems, will have the interests of the breed at heart and will be able to advise on how to care for your new puppy.

These dogs may reach a maximum of 10 inches in height and 9 pound in weight. Although small, they are tough and very brave. As a breed, they sometimes develop skin and eye problems. Slipped stifle occurs occasionally. Some are fussy eaters. Teeth problems can be minimized by feeding dry dog biscuits as part of their diet.

Because of the long white coat, the Maltese is fairly high maintenance as regards grooming. Although the hair is silky, unless kept brushed, knots and tangles will develop. These can be difficult to remove and cause a lot of discomfort. You may prefer to keep your pet clipped.

Damp conditions do not suit this breed and thorough drying after a bath is necessary. The beard tends to get dirty and should be wiped after feeding. Although it is active indoors and will romp and play, all canines need a daily walk as well. The lifespan is 15 to 18 years and they remain playful for most of this time.

With early socialization and firm training, they will know their place in the family and not try to become dominant. Inconsistent handling can result in behavioral problems which may manifest in continual barking and perhaps snapping at strangers or even family members. This is a low-shedding breed and one of those recommended for people with allergies. If looking for low-allergenic maltese puppies boston dog-lovers will be able to find a breeder to help.
