Kyi-Leo - the trademarked Dog
Who wouldn't be amused to see a foot tall dog that deftly runs around the legs of the people and performs tricks like walking on its hind legs or rolling over and over like a fur ball? A dog that does these tricks is obviously a show off. The ability to do tricks plus an attractive appearance - a good combination for a lap dog. A living stuffed toy - this is what this dog appears to be because the longish black and white or white and gold silky coat that covers the well proportioned body give the dog an attractive and cuddly appearance. The head is profusely covered with hair that forms a beard and whiskers. The dog is a Kyi-Leo, the dog with the trademark sign on its name.
The Kyi-Leo is a fairly new breed developed from the mating of a Maltese and a Lhasa Apso. Development of this breed occurred in San Francisco Bay area during the 1950s. Breed name gives credit to the progenitors as Lhasa Apso is Tibetan and the Tibetan word for dog is kyi and leo is from the Maltese also know as Lion Dog.
The Kyi-Leo is another breed under the lap dog umbrella. Just like other lap dog breeds, the Kyi-leo is people oriented. This breed has the ideal characteristics of an ultimate family pet. This affectionate dog bonds closely with the family. The dog makes an ideal playmate of children as it is not easily provoked and known to manifest a tolerant attitude. Being a lap dog, the Kyi-Leo would appreciate being cuddled and petted by its favorite people.
The dog can be a good watch dog because it has very sensitive ears and it is also wary of strangers. However, a Kyi-Leo has the quirky attitude of barking to alert the family of strangers but when the intruder comes near; the dog would run with the cute little tail between the legs. All bark and no bite, the dog will avoid confrontations at all cost. Kyi-Leo would do well in apartments as the exercise requirements can be satisfied even indoors. This dog would make a lively playmate of the children but supervision is necessary given that these are delicate dogs and boisterous children can inadvertently hurt the dog.
The Kyi-Leo is recognized as a legitimate breed by ARBA (American Rare Bred Association). In spite of being a fairly new breed, the Kyi-Leo has gained a large following. These dogs are now ensconced in the homes of doting pet owners. Mariah Carey, the world renowned singer has Kyi-Leo pets.
