Dog owner's Responsibilities

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are aptly dubbed as man's best friends. Dogs are not only affectionate animals as they are also loyal and protective of their owners. Taking a dog for a pet though entails a big responsibility. Anyone that would not take on the responsibility of caring for a dog should not get one for a pet and get a toy dog instead. Dog ownership is a serious commitment that would last until the dog lives. A responsible owner would still care for the pet even if it has become a nuisance and would find ways to correct the dog's problematic behavior instead of abandoning the pet.

Dogs in the wild have survived without the intervention of man. However, modern day dogs entirely depend on their human friend for their food as well as social and health needs. Vitamins and supplements in addition to a nutrient-rich diet is provided by the dog owner to ensure the health of the pet. A dog owner would schedule a visit to the vet for general check up, worming and vaccinations to ensure that health concerns that will affect the health of the pet will be prevented.

Caring for a puppy is not unlike caring for a baby thus the home must be dog proofed to give the dog a safe environment. Dogs that are not allowed to stay inside the home must be provided with adequate shelter. Dogs have high exercise requirements thus it is very important for owners to regularly provide the pet with opportunities to exercise.

A responsible dog would make sure that the pet becomes a good canine citizen. Socialization and obedience training will make sure that the pet learns manners that will make it a good canine citizen. Socialization is done by exposing the pet to new things and new situations. Obedience training is one way of getting the dog to develop an even temperament.

Dogs need love and attention because they are social animals. One of the most important responsibilities of a dog owner is to set aside time to bond with the pet. Grooming sessions would be good bonding moments and so is playing with the pet a few minutes each day. A dog no doubt will be a wonderful addition to the family but getting one must be carefully considered because dog ownership entails important responsibilities that must be done for the well being of the pet. Remember, dogs are not toys that can be placed in a corner once the owner gets tired of playing.
