How To Correctly Clean Your Dog's Teeth

Some people may not know that a dog needs to have
their teeth cleaned and cared for. The truth is
it is just as important to care for your pet's
teeth as it is your own.

Some prefer to give the dog a raw bone in order
to clean the teeth naturally. Some prefer to give
the dog a product called oatmeal bones which is
the same idea as a raw bone. Others prefer to
brush a dog's teeth manually. We will look at
each of these ways more thoroughly.

A raw bone is nothing other than what it sounds
like, a bone that it raw. It has marrow in the
center that the dog will try to get out with its
tongue and teeth. The chewing motion helps to
clean the dog's teeth. Some dogs love the bones
and others really do not know what to do with
them. Raw bones are the cheapest alternative in
cleaning a dog's teeth. Once the marrow is
cleared out from the middle you can put
something like peanut butter in its place to
encourage the dog to continue to try to chew it.

Oatmeal bones are a man made treat that look
like toothbrushes but are more like bones. They
go by the weight of the dog. The dog has to be
over 6 months old to enjoy them as the package
states. Unless you can find a deal on the
internet or at the local pet shop, Greenies can
get pricey because they should be given every
day.

Brushing a dog's teeth manually is the last way
to clean a dog's teeth at home. There are special
dog-friendly toothpaste that should be used. Dogs
cannot spit out toothpaste and therefore human
toothpaste cannot be used as it should not be
ingested. Start by rubbing your dogs gums to get
it ready for the stimulation of brushing the
teeth. This may take a few sessions before the
dog is ready for brushing the teeth. Then let
the dog taste different flavors of dog
toothpaste. It may take a few tries to find one
it likes. Then after the dog will let you
explore in its mouth use the toothbrush and
toothpaste together. Use circular motions and
focus on the plaque.

The last option is to go to your veterinarian.
This by far is the most expensive method.
Whatever you choose, your dog will live a long
and healthy plaque-free life.
