The Versatile Tail of Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

Different dog breeds have different kinds of tails. Some dog breeds have very short tails. Other dogs would not fail to gain the attention of people because the impressive appearance is enhanced by the long well feathered tail. Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Keeshonds are only some of the dog breeds noted to have beautiful long and well feathered tails. In line with their function, tail of some breeds are purposely docked.

The tail can enhance the appearance of the dog but this appendage does have some other function. The tail is a serviceable body part of a dog although many dog owners would see the tail as just a rather useless appendage of the dog's trunk. Dogs cannot talk and they use body parts to communicate. We know that dogs cannot talk and yet these intelligent animal have the ability to communicate with humans and with other animals. A person that has kept dogs would easily know the mood of the pet by looking at the tail. An exuberantly wagging tail means that the dog is very happy or excited. Don't mess with a dog that holds the rigid tail high as it is a sign that the dog is aggressive. A tail that is held under the legs is an indication that something has frightened the pet.

Working dogs can find many uses for the tail. Thornjack, a breed of shepherd dog hold the tail high so that the it can be easily seen among the sheep it protects. With the tail a dog has an efficient counterbalance tool. A dog is known to follow a prey even in stiff ledges and similar to a tightrope walker, the tail is used as a counter balance. The tail is used by pointing dogs to point the location of the game to the human hunter.

Sighthounds and other breeds of dogs that run very fast have very long thin tails that are used as counter balance that prevent them from falling over when they need to make a sharp turn or when they have to stop abruptly while chasing a prey. The tail would function as a rudder that makes for efficient steering for retrievers and other dog breeds that work in the water.

Long bushy tail is common in northern breeds as this kind of tail is used by the dog for warmth. These dogs would usually sleep outdoors and as a protection against the elements, the dogs would curl up and use the tail to cover the face. Dogs also use the tail as a fly and insect swatter.
