Toxic Dogs That Must Not be Given to Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

Only very few dog owners are not aware that chocolate is poisonous to dogs. A lot of dogs have died because of this comfort food. Chocolate has a toxic substance known as Theobromine that stimulates the dog's nervous system so that the pet will have a rapid heart rate and very fast pulse. A dog would be lucky if vomiting and diarrhea are the only ill effects of eating chocolates. The over stimulation of the nervous system though can cause the dog to have tremors, to seize and to die.

Not only chocolates would have ill effects on the dog as some human foods are toxic to dogs as well. Foods that are commonly consumed by humans can have dangerous effects on the dog. It is therefore the responsibility of each and every dog owner to know what people foods can have toxic effects on the dog.

As with humans, dogs too would get healthful benefits from fruits. Dogs can have any kinds of fruit but not grapes and avocados because they contain substances that can poison the dog. More and more dog owners are taking the time to provide the pet home cooked meals fearing that commercial pet foods may be contaminated. Dogs are not picky eaters thus owners need not use onions and garlic to enhance the flavor of the home cooked meals as these common food ingredients are poisonous to dogs. Onions and garlic are foods that have toxic effects on dogs. Eating onions and garlic has the ill effect of bursting the red blood cells of the dog. Dogs that are regularly fed onions and garlic can develop anemia.

Dogs must be prevented from eating tomatoes and potatoes because these are poisonous to dogs too. The oxalates in potatoes and tomatoes damage the dog's kidneys and cause abnormal functioning of the nervous system and the digestive system. Green tomatoes are most toxic but the dog must be prevented from eating the leaves or the tomato plant as doing so would cause the dog to have tremors, to seize and to suffer from heart arrhythmia.

Foods known to be poisonous to dogs vary in the degree of toxicity. A dog that was purposely given these toxic foods may not be affected at all. This is not an indication that the known toxic food is not poisonous to the dog after all. The amount of the food ingested, the type of toxicity as well as the body weight of the pet affects the toxicity. The toxic food may have damaged the vital organs and these effects will not be visible. Dog owners have to be careful in allowing the pet to eat people food.
