What to do if a stray dog is found

By Jerry Welsh

Stray dogs are often seen roaming the streets. If you see an obviously lost dog on the countryside, would you pull over, be a Good Samaritan and try to help the stray or would you drive on and chuck the pitiful sight as one of the facts of life? Dogs get lost all the time as these animals are lured to wander by interesting scents and sounds. Some stray dogs though were dumped by dog owners that are either overwhelmed with the unmanageable behavior of the dog or simply uninterested with the pet.

Dogs are wonderful animals but not all dogs are friendly. You may have good intentions in helping a stray dog but be aware of the fact that you may be helping an aggressive dog. Be very careful if you decide to stop and help the animal. A dog can turn vicious if it does not understand your intention to help. Bear in mind that the stray dog's vaccination status is unknown thus the risk of infections is high. You can only approach and secure the dog if it has not shown aggression. But if the dog is aggressive, your only recourse would be to notify the animal control authorities.

A stray dog that is naturally friendly would go with a person that has offered a helping hand. Strays are commonly hungry and the sight of food can make an aloof dog docile. You may be able to capture the dog by speaking gently and offering food. The first thing that must be done is to check for identification tags so that the owners can be notified.

If the dog has no identification tags, you can either take the dog to an animal shelter or take the dog home while trying to find its owners. If you have decided to take the stray home, it would be best to take the dog first for vaccinations and blood and fecal exams to rule out any canine diseases and parasite infestation. If a vet visit is not possible you need to isolate the stray to protect your other pets from diseases and parasites that the stray can be carrying.

Stray dogs are either lost or really homeless. Because homeless strays have been surviving on their own, they generally have a skeletal appearance. An owned dog that had been lost for quite a while would have a bedraggled appearance but it would be evident that the dog was once a well groomed pet. Owners of dogs that have strayed are surely looking for their pet. Inform the authorities that you have found a dog. It would be a great feeling to be able to help an owner be reunited with the pet.
