Why Cat Trees Are Fantastic For Your Cat's Sanity

By Robert Baker

Cat trees are the ultimate toy for any cat. They are usually constructed of sisal covered scratching posts and carpeted platforms. Some may have toys attached and they can be up to six feet tall.

The sisal rope is designed for the cat to scratch. This helps to keep the cat's claws in good shape and can reduce the need for clipping. A sisal scratching post is a great way to keep cat's from clawing furniture.

Larger cat trees often have an arrangement of many scratching posts and platforms. This allows the cat to climb the tree. Some are completed with cat beds on the top, giving the cat a place to sleep.

Energetic cats in particular enjoy climbing and providing a place for them to do this can help keep them entertained. Cats often enjoy trees placed near windows so that they can sunbathe on the platforms. It is a good idea to avoid placing them near areas that the cat is not supposed to climb.

Cleaning a cat tree can usually be done with a hoover and an upholstery attachment. They are designed to last for a long time but sometimes damage can occur with heavy use. Most damage is easy to repair.

Most commonly it is the sisal rope that becomes damaged first. If the rope becomes frayed from scratching, first disassemble the posts and platforms. The sisal is usually held in place with glue or upholstery staples that can be prised off. Once the old sisal is removed, wrap the new sisal rope around the post and secure it before reassembling the tree.

Cat trees are a good idea for most cat owners and the required size will usually depend on the energy level of the cat. A problem many cat owners find is that it can be tricky to fit a tree into small spaces. In this case, consider mounting the components to the wall to maximize your floor space.
