Man's Best Friend Requires Good Dog Training

By Virginia Mendez

The correct dog training practices make a huge differences in how well an animal will react and learn. Pavlov had it right, conditioned response teaches our dog to behave in a predictable manner. This conditioning can be good or bad depending on the teaching methods used. There is more to our canine friends however than simply robotic reaction to stimuli. There is more going on in the head of a K9 than consideration of his next meal.

The German Sheppard is claimed to have the intellect of a five year old child. This animal is able to understand up to two hundred twenty five words, count to five, and at times understand multi-task commands. This suggests a high level of understanding rather than simple conditioned response.

What an animal does not understand is the difference between right and wrong. This is something that must be taught. Ripping up trash, eating shoes, and chewing on table legs probably sound like a great time to most canines. Proper training will make him understand that these are not acceptable activities within the human household. What he does understand is hierarchy.

First and foremost, learn and understand what hierarchy is and means to a dog. All dogs are pack animals, whether they are wild or domesticated. There is and always will be a chain of command. Bringing a dog into the home means "teaching him his place". A K9 who is allowed to do whatever strikes his fancy at the moment makes for a bad pet.

Female dogs are at risk of deciding they are Alpha as well as males. In the canine world this pack leader is in charge. He or she eats first, eats best, and is ahead of all other pack members. The family is the animal's pack. Proper training is key to avoiding this negative outcome.

The human family should always make sure the canine knows they are above him. Most people love their pets and consider them to be family members. This is fine, as long as Fido understands he is lowest in order of importance. Small children should never be left alone with the family dog. Make sure to look him in the eye, and be sure to keep a physical position that is above his. No one wants to create an Alpha male, as it has potential for becoming dangerous.

Take the time to properly teach the family pet. Choose the best dog training and the best pet ever will be a lovable, loyal addition to the family.
