Reasons why dogs have separation anxiety?

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs have certainly made a great difference to people's way of life. One of the reasons why dogs are considered as man's best friends is the legendary attachment these animals have for humans. The strong ties humans have with their dogs is one of the additional benefits that people gain in keeping a dog for a pet. Unlike cats, dogs become too dependent on their owners.

Because these animals form a strong bond with the human family they would not only expect to receive attention but would also demand to be with the master at all times. Because of this, dogs are dubbed as Velcro pets. Dog owners would want to have an affectionate and loyal pet but the strong bond can lead to separation anxiety and as no owner would want to have an unmanageable pet, a lot of dogs with this behavioral concern are either abandoned or euthanized. Separation anxiety is one of the reasons why dogs turn into destructive pets.

A dog owner is presumed ready to tackle the barking, chewing and other canine behaviors. However, this normal canine behaviors becomes excessive in dogs suffering from separation anxiety. A dog with separation anxiety is a well behaved dog whenever the pet owner is around but once the owner leaves, the dog will manifest excessive canine behaviors and become destructive. In severe cases, a dog that is having a panic attack for being left by the master can jump through windows or even mutilate its own self.

Why do dogs have separation anxiety? Being social creatures, dogs would always love to interact with all the members of the family. A dog would love nothing more than being with the master every minute of every day. A dog that is separated from its owner becomes vulnerable, confused and have panic attacks. Being pack animals, dogs must be made to realize that the human is the leader of the pack. Weak willed owners that have not taken the trouble to obedience train the dog have pets that consider themselves as the leader of the pack. Either way, the dog would not appreciate being separated from the pack.

Generally dogs that have a separation anxiety disorder are dogs that were abandoned and abused. Dogs suffering from this disorder would start to manifest a destructive behavior as soon as the master is seen about to leave the home. The destructive behavior of a dog suffering from separation anxiety will be triggered if the master is seen taking the coat, picking up the car keys and opening the door.
