Silver Labradors Are Perfect Pets

By Chloe Gib

The Labrador retriever is a dog breed that is known and loved throughout the world. Although some controversy surrounds Silver Labradors, this variation of the aforementioned dog has enjoyed an increase in popularity over the past few years. This is why individuals who are shopping for lab puppies for sale in California may wish to give thought to this beautiful breed.

Originally from Newfoundland, Canada, this dog was bred to help fishermen pull their nets from the icy waters surrounding their boats. The breed was then brought to England where its retrieving instincts were further developed. One of the wisest choices for a family pet, such dogs typically possess a mild disposition and they are known for being very loyal to their owners.

As mentioned above, a certain level of controversy exists with regard to purebred Labrador coloring. The silver Lab is not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club, as are dogs that feature traditional Labrador shades, such as black, yellow or chocolate. Numerous breeders, however, oppose this disqualification.

They cite the dog breed's lineage as proof of its purebred status. Those who oppose this argue that Silver Labradors are a cross between the Labrador and the Weimaraner. DNA testing and mapping were completed at the close of the last century and the ancestry of such dogs was scrutinized by various dog breed experts around the world, all of whom concluded that there is no reason to doubt the dog's status as a purebred Labrador. However, there are many breeders and individuals who still refuse to accept this conclusion.

However, regardless of such opposing views, all dogs of this type feature the same distinct characteristics. For instance, they are a muscular, solid breed with a coat that is stiff, short and water resistant. They typically have wide muzzles and broad heads. Additionally, they have pendant-type ears that are moderate in size.

Their otter-like tails taper off to a narrow point, but are quite thick where they connect to the animal's body. Their paws are somewhat webbed, a characteristic that enhances their natural swimming abilities. Silver labs also have gray paw pads and gray noses. Their eyes are pale yellow, although their color does not fully develop until they reach six months of age, prior to which they are blue.

There are many breeders who specialize in Silver Labradors and charcoal Labs. Therefore, they are not difficult to find in most areas of the country. It is important, however, to select only a reputable breeder with whom to do business. Regardless of whether or not they are a recognized breed by national kennel organizations, many individuals choose to own these beautiful, lovable dogs.
