Budgies as Pets

By Cathy Doggins

Budgies or Parakeets are the most popular type of domesticated bird. They can be found in pet stores around the world. They're easy to maintain and are full of vitality and character. Parakeets are active creatures that like to interact with toys, chat and engage with their owners and as social animals, other birds. In fact, it is estimated that there are more than 5,000,000 birds found in natural settings in countries like Columbia, Florida, Brazil and Japan.

When adopting a parakeet or budgie look for a young bird. Look for indications such as black eyes, and stripes just behind the bare skin around the birds nostrils. In older birds, the stripes lead from the eyes across the head and the eyes are white. Parakeets constantly gossip and can talk if taught when young. '

The birds can be found in numerous shades. Parakeets are best known for having a bright green body and yellow face. Other colors includeblack edged feathers and a blue dot on the cheek. The end of the budgies beak is brown. The birds are adept at self grooming the feathers. Breeders have mixed parakeets to create a rainbow of colors. This includes colors such as yellow, blue, white, gray and spots of lighter colours. The most healthy parakeets are green.

Young birds can be trained. The wings of young birds can be clipped for easier handling and to avoid injury if the bird jumps out of your hands. Birds are first taught how to step on a the owners finger. Say a command that the bird will associate with the action. Once the bird makes the connection, he or she will step on a finger every time the parakeet recognizes the word. Sessions should occur each day till the behavior is understood.

Introduce your parakeet to an array of foods when young. This will make a familiarity with foods that will be used throughout the birds life. Parakeets eat a mix of seeds. The primary seed is white millet. To ensure that the bird stays healthy, this may be mixed with fortified seeds. The diet should also be comprised of dark green veggies, and fruit slices like apple or grapes. If an owner intends to breed a bird, or when the bird is young, also include an boiled egg or egg supplement. Instead of vitamin enriched food, an owner can feed the parakeet a supplement in a feeder type bottle.

Taking these steps and keeping your birds cage clean will lead to a lasting relationship between you and your budgie.
