Buying A Brand New Pet Crate And How To Use It Correctly

By Lenore Cadogan

The friendship, unconditional love and fun that each of my own dogs have brought me throughout the years has been invaluable. Of course, the brand new puppy experience offers some incredible adventures into re-experiencing the world throughout the eyes of this very new and impressionable life. But take into account that bringing that new puppy home comes with the commitment of time, perseverance and financial resources for many years.

There's a lot to contemplate in preparing your own self and your home for your new arrival. One of the first items you will need to buy is a dog or dog crate and its bedding. It is vital for your new puppy to have an area he can call his own, a hideaway exactly where he can find convenience, a place exactly where he could feel safe. A dog crate with bedding will become your own puppy's den, his favourite place to nap or take refuge throughout bad weather.

A dog should never be left alone in a cage for more than 3 hours at a time. After all, we're speaking about a puppy and they are simply not able to manage their own bowels or bladder for a period of time longer than this. If you're going to be gone longer, than it is recommended you use an exercise pen or play pen. Your pup should make a good mental association with the pet crate. Therefore, it should never be used as a way of punishment. If utilized in a bad way, your puppy will learn to fear it and refuse to use it.

Your puppy crate is also not a replacement for a dog sitter or doggie day care. A dog that's crated for too long doesn't get adequate human interaction or workout and will probably become anxious or depressed, directly affecting how your puppy interacts with you.

In selecting a puppy crate make sure you take into account what precisely his adult size would be, and purchase a crate based on his projected adult size. The crate should be huge enough in order that he will be able to stand up and turn around. Of course, the crate needs to be comfy so bedding is important.
