Choking On Bird Dust?---4 Ways To Minimize The Dust In Your Air

Bird dust can block your pet's air passages and
allow disease and infection to take hold. It
can also cause and aggravate respiratory
conditions in humans. Before either of these
things happen, here are 4 things you can do
right now to minimize the dust.

Clean Frequently--- The dander and dust that
birds generate as they fly, swing, preen, and
shake can send hundreds of particles into the
air. If you have more than one bird the air can
literally become thick with dust.

Cleaning often is important to maintain the
health of your birds and the humans that take
care of them. You will be the best judge of how
often it is necessary to wipe down surfaces,
vacuum, and change the paper in the cage.

In order to have a fighting chance against the
rapid accumulation of dust, cleaning every other
day is good. Cleaning every day is even better.

Use a HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting
vacuum to keep particles from being return to the
air. Use a damp cloth and mop to really trap
particles and eliminate them.

Use Dust Friendly Furnishings--- Carefully
choosing furnishings for your aviary can really
make cleaning easier. Avoid as many fabrics as
possible. Woven materials (including carpet) can
and will trap numerous particles. Air currents
and normal actives by the birds and humans can
constant stir up dust and send it airborne.

Opting for seating that can be wiped clean with
a cloth, floors that can be damp mopped, and
window treatments that allow dust to fall to the
floor are all great choices for the birds' room.

Limit The Number And Type Of Bird--- Too many
birds often means not being able to keep up with
the cleaning that multiple birds will require.
Keep in mind that powder down birds such as
African Greys, Cockatoos, and Cockatiels produce
a white powder (known as powder down parrots) in
addition to the dander that all birds produce.
If you have multiple powder down birds, the
particle count increases exponentially.

Saying no to adopting additional birds can seem
hard, but not being able to provide a quality
life for them because their living conditions
are unhealthy is not a good idea for you or a
bird. Adopt only the number of birds that you
can realistically care for, and then you will be
able give them the best that life has to offer.

Filter The Air--- Using an air cleaner to keep
the air clean can greatly reduce the amount of
particles in the air and keep your birds' air
passages clear and therefore healthier. HEPA
filtration is best at removing airborne
particles because by definition this technology
must be able to remove 97,000 out of every
10,000 particles that are.3 microns or larger in
size.

It would be wonderful to think that there is a
way to completely eliminate bird dust, but there
is not. The best that you can hope for is to
drastically reduce the amount that is available
to be circulated and reduce that amount even
further with filtration.

Taking these steps will help you give your bird
the best life possible. And that will help
insure many happy years of enjoyment for you
both.
