Deer, the Wild Animal That Sheds Its Antlers Every Year

Deer are hoofed animals that can be found in many
places throughout the world. These animals are
interesting because they actually shed their
antlers. In most cases, only the male of the
species will shed its antlers; however, when it
comes to reindeer, the females will shed their
antlers as well. There are many hoofed animals
that resemble deer; however, they are not
considered to be a part of this species because
they do not shed their antlers. This is one of
the features that make deer stand apart from the
other animals that resemble it.

Deer come in a wide variety of different sizes,
and they can weight anywhere between 70 to 700
pounds depending on their species. The northern
pudu is one of the smallest species of deer, and
the moose is one of the largest. These animals
are excellent jumpers, swimmers, and runners.
They have extremely strong legs that they use on
a regular basis.

Deer mark their territory by utilizing the
scent glands that are located near their eyes.
In most cases, deer will rub these glands
against trees in order to let other deer know
where the herd is. However, human hunters have
learned to use this marking as a way to find the
herds of deer.

Female deer will carry the babies in their
bellies for up to ten months until they are
born. When deer are born, they are able to walk
just a few minutes later. The female is
responsible for caring for the fawn. When the
fawn is still little, it will hide in the grass
as its mother goes off in search of food.
However, after only a month, the fawn is strong
enough to go searching for food along with its
mother. Typically, the fawn will spend its first
year of life with its mother. Females will come
back with their babies and form a new heard of
deer, but the males will typically not return to
their mother.

There are many countries that eat the meat of
the deer. This kind of meat is known as venison.
This began because deer would eat the crops that
people had planted. People began to kill the
deer, and found out that they were able to cook
and eat the meat that came from this animal.

There are many accidents that happen each year
in the United States that are due to deer
crossing the road. If a deer sees the headlights
of a car as it is crossing the road, it will stop
in the middle of the road. This is what causes so
many of the accidents that occur.
