Labrador Training: Housebreaking Strategies

By Kate Truman

Labrador Retrievers are lovable creatures. They're playful, obedient and there for you on any occasion. They make superb pets as they are wonderful companions for anyone of any age. While Labs are excellent, they do demand Labrador training in order for them to learn how to act appropriately. The tips in this post ought to help you with training your furry friend.

Housebreaking a dog, no matter breed, takes time. The secret is to be consistent when teaching him where it isn't acceptable for him to relieve himself and consistent in the message that you send as to where you want him to go. This can be on a pad inside the house, on a lead when you take him outdoors or running free in a fenced yard.

A great way to potty-train your furry companion is to use a crate. A dog is not going to potty where he sleeps so keep him in his crate and let him out for potty breaks at regular intervals to prevent him from soiling the crate. In due course, your canine friend will understand that bathroom time is outdoor time therefore will look forward to it. When crate training a pup, be sure to take him out every hour or so since puppies don't have full control of their need to pee or poop. Adult dogs alternatively only have to be taken out after waking up in the morning, after eating, drinking or exercise, when stressed and before going to bed at night. Reward him, be it with praise, treat or playtime after he does his thing. Furthermore, remember not to force him to go back in immediately after potty break since it might cause him to delay urination and defecation to lengthen his stay outside.

During Labrador training particularly when you're housebreaking your furry companion, it's important that you keep him on a strict feeding schedule. Offer food two times a day, at the same time each day. Don't feed your four-legged friend food they are not accustomed to during housebreaking. Very rich foods, for example, make it hard for a dog to control his bowel. Stick to the tried and true when it comes to types of food and the amount you feed.

As mentioned before, dogs such as the Labrador Retrievers are lovable animals due to their playfulness and obedient nature. They're always there for you and make excellent companions. With the excellent qualities that this dog breed has, they will need proper Labrador training. Using the tips from this article, you can train any dog into the perfect companion.
