When Seeking Miniature Dachshunds For Sale Contact Dependable Breeders

By Darcy Deleo

Miniature dachshunds for sale may be advertised in a number of places. Before rushing off to view these lovely dogs, establish that the breeder is reputable. Because of the genetic problems which are found, it is essential to buy from a breeder who has the best interests of his dogs at heart.

The dachshund was developed to hunt badgers and other game. It was intended to go down burrows after its prey so needed to be low-slung and long. Having such a long back creates problems for the dog apart from any genetic conditions. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is one of these and can be difficult to diagnose. The pressure of the vertebrae on the spinal canal causes acute pain.

Becoming overweight increases the risk of back disorders. Obesity also predisposes the dog to diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems. Some types of cancer are also reasonably common as are seizures. These are generally controlled by medication. For general good health, it is important to keep the dog at a healthy weight.

These are active, energetic dogs and not suited to life as simply a lapdog. They will thrive on plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Like many small breeds, they are fearless little dogs and will stand up to much bigger dogs if they think their loved ones are threatened. When playing with your pet, it should be prevented from jumping too much as this can cause problems with their back.

Bored dogs often become destructive and the dachshund is no exception. They can be stubborn and may be challenging to train. They are also very intelligent and not above trying to outwit their owners. Maintenance is relatively easy with a good weekly brush helping get rid of shedding hair. As the hanging ears can hide ticks and infections from view, it is important to examine the ears regularly.

The breed is long-lived with fourteen years being the average. They weigh around ten pounds. There are a variety of colors available. One-color coats include cream, wheaten, black, fawn and chocolate. Red dachshunds are also popular. The coat can also appear in several patterns including brindle and dapple. Piebald dachshunds have patches of black and white.

There are three types of coat. Smooth-haired dogs have shiny, short coats. Long-haired types often have very long hair on the tail. The coat may be wavy but shouldn't be curly as this is considered a fault. The third coat type is the wire-haired. The coat is rough, short and thick. There is a distinctive beard and eyebrows. If you want to find healthy miniature dachshunds for sale, contact a reputable breeder.
