By Geraldine Dimarco

I don't know about you but I think all families will eventually come to a point wherein they will want to have a pet of their own. Especially if you're a young family with a kid on your hands, a pup that can keep up with him and make him more responsible will really be a good investment. Now, don't go and run to the nearest pet shop to find the first cute thing you see on four legs. Read up on what makes the best dog breeds for families before making your decision. Here is a short guide on how to do just that.

Firstly, we need to recognize that as with all dogs, families too come in all shapes and sizes. This means that you need to think about certain factors like your family's needs and specific traits, and it should align with the adopted animal's qualities.

Take a look at your family. How many people are living in your home? Is it just you and your spouse or do you have children living with you? How young are the children? Are they mature enough to take care of a dog properly? If not, then you should get a low maintenance pet that are good with children. Take the members of your family to the doctor to find out if they have any allergies that you should know about as well. Dogs sometimes cause allergies because of their dander, or if not, because of the irritants that they bring into the house.

Then again, you also have to think about the lifestyle that you have and the place that you stay in. Are you in the city or do you live in the suburbs? Many apartment owners don't allow pets inside their premises. Who stays in your house when you're gone? No matter how smart you think your doggie is, he still needs human supervision most of the times.

One of the best dog breeds for families is usually the Golden Retriever. They are happy, devoted and are eager to please. They love people and are very friendly-and they are known to protect children from danger and strangers if need be. Labrador Retrievers are also excellent pet to have for the same reason. Border Collies are said to be the most intelligent canine there is. They used to help shepherds herding their flocks so Collies should be good in rounding up children safely and gently.

While they are very friendly dogs, they also can be trusted to protect children from strangers and harmful elements. Border Collies are the smartest dogs there are. They can be trained with even complex commands and are good with children and all kinds of people.

Dogs like Great Danes, St. Bernards and Newfoundlands are gentle giants that are pretty laidback in personality. Other than those few breeds, you can expect active dogs that need exercise to vent off excess energy. Also check if you can set aside enough money to maintain your dog's lifestyle, diet, vet visits, etc. before buying a pet of your own.
