Essential Information on Dog UTI You Will Want to Know About

By Geraldine Dimarco

What is dog urinary tract infection? This seems to be a common enough condition our canine friends become afflicted with. It is part of being a responsible dog owner to know the nature, symptoms and preventative measures of dog UTI so we are able to avoid having our pets suffer unnecessarily from it.

Dog UTI is contracted by ingesting dirty food and water. Bacteria like Escherichia Coli, esterococcus, coagulase, positive straphylococcus, proteus mirabilis, klebsiella, and pseudomonas are the main culprits of this disease. They infiltrate the dog's system through their bloodstream, reaching the other internal organs. When these bacteria are not eliminated, urinary tract infection is the most likely occurrence you can expect.

Urinary tract infection is when the immune system of the host is weak and is unable to cope with the bacteria that are allowed to remain in their systems. The danger is when the animal continues to eat things that are contaminated because the chances of his other organs being infected significantly increases. Female dogs are more susceptible with UTI because of their shorter urethra. Wash and clean your dog often (male or female) and trim their fur especially around their genital area.

Symptoms of UTI will be manifested in his urinating habits. If he pees frequently and is excessively thirsty because of dehydration, you can be sure that something is wrong inside him. It may not be UTI, but you will need to get the diagnosis of his urine test immediately. Being completely unable to pee is a sign of more advanced bladder problem that must be addressed as soon as you notice it.

While this is indeed an unfortunate ailment that we do not want to see our pets suffer from, there are steps we can do to prevent this from coming to pass. Provide him with fresh, distilled water and citrus drinks. The fluids will wash away the toxins and any harmful organisms in his body. The acidity in citrus drinks like cranberry and apple cider vinegar lowers the bacteria found in the urine.

Danger arises when bacteria is settles in the bladder for a long time. Therefore, you can prevent UTI by encouraging the dog to take frequent toilet breaks during the day. Make going outdoor for "business purposes" accessible and easy for him-perhaps situate his cage by the back or have a flap installed in the door. Remember, the faster the urine is expelled from the animal, the better.

Provide proper nutrition and clean food for your dog always. Dispose uneaten food after the dog is finished feeding so it will not be exposed to more bacteria. As much as possible, maintain sanitary conditions for your pet to live in to lessen any chance of infection.

Regular check-ups to the vet will ensure that any disease your dog might be suffering from will be hindered from progressing. When you are able to detect and arrest the symptoms early on, treatment is generally easier and more likely to be successful. Stop dog urinary tract infection on its tracks with these simple and effective tips and information.
