Beauceron - Fundamental Facts You Should Understand
The Beauceron (often called the "Beauce Sheep
Dog" or "Red Stocking") belongs to the herding
dog category. They feature a short black coat
with tan or grey markings. The breed is assumed
to have first came into existence during the
1500s. They were initially bred for herding and
guarding sheep. Today they're a popular
selection as a herding or companionship dog.
Attributes such as their high intelligence,
courage and demand for challenges are what they
can be distinguished by. Their breeding lineage
includes shared ancestors with another French
breed in the Briard and are assumed to have been
developed in France.
They're classed as a medium to large sized
breed. The standard female size is 24-26.5
inches high with a weight of 65-85 pounds,
whereas the male dimensions are 25.5-27.5 inches
tall with a weight of 65-110 pounds. Their manner
is famously known to be courageous and loyal. The
breed is usually suspicious with people they
haven't met, and this makes them suitable as a
guard dog. The breed is confirmed to be highly
smart, and scores quite highly in comparison to
all other dogs when being trained to learn new
things.
They're fairly suitable for a family pet, due to
the fact they're good towards children. Other
pets like other dogs and cats when socialized do
get along peacefully with them. One simple job is
taking care of their coat. They call for
occasional brushing of their coat once every
week (more in the shedding season), and a
full-body groom every 4 to 8 weeks. They won't
always be suitable for living in an apartment,
but prefer a large yard so they have plenty of
space.
As with most medium to large sized dogs, they're
primarily shorter-lived and have an expected life
of 10-12 years. Their primary health problem is
hip dysplasia, and they can also be vulnerable
to bloat and PRA. Things such as herding,
swimming, agility and games of fetch will keep
them entertained. They have a high level of
energy, which calls for long (with varying
routes) walks every day to avoid the development
of bad habits.
You need to be ready to meet their high demand
for leadership, exercise and mental stimulation
if you own the Beauceron. They're a perfect
choice for active owners or those with a job for
them, but not the best choice for those with a
less active lifestyle. One of the more
attractive characteristics about this dog is the
fact it can be a great choice for defending the
home and family due to its courageous and loyal
nature.
