English Labradors Are Just Adorable

By Flossie Gibbs

There are two basic types of Labradors, English and American. English Labradors are heavier and thicker than their American cousins. They come in solid black, yellow and chocolate color, and their eyes should be gentle and dark brown, surrounded by a black line. Chocolate version sometimes might have hazel eyes as well.

English Labs weigh 70 to 80 pounds, and females are a little bit lighter. They are up to 24 inches tall, but some dogs might be both bigger and heavier. It is expected they will live up to twelve years, but if you take a really good care of their diet and health in general, they might live longer. In any case, they need to exercise to be healthy.

English Labs have heavy bones and wide and powerfully built neck. Their head is wide at the forehead and thick at the muzzle. Medium sized ears should hang down, pendant in shape. A tail is long, covered with thick, smooth hair. When they are calm, the tail hangs down relaxed.

Labs' coats are short, smooth and easy to care for. Regular combing and brushing with a firm, bristle brush will keep them tidy. They are average shedders, but easy to maintain. Thanks to their Newfoundland ancestors, their coats are water-resistant, and they really enjoy all water activities.

If they don't walk regularly, Labs might become disobedient and chew your furniture. They need at least half an hour of brisk walk every day, but they will happily run beside your bike as well. They really are very nice dogs and have especially kind nature. Playful and obedient, they live to please you and they really are easy to train.

Besides being ideal family dogs, Labs excel in other disciplines as well. They make perfect watch dogs, blind persons' guides, hunters, trackers or police dogs. Their sensitive noses are just perfect for detecting various narcotics. They also make very good show dogs, thanks to their obedience and intelligence. American type is still the most popular breed in the United States, but Labs are popular worldwide.

Labs need a leader, but puppies have to be socialized very early. Every good breeder will make proper puppy socialization and habitation his priority. Although they are obedient and kind by nature, you need to train them properly. Your dog has to be trained to heel beside or behind you during your walks and accept you as a leader, and you won't have any problems with him.

This is generally healthy breed, but you need to make sure your dog is regularly checked up by his vet. Labs prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, and they might have problems with their eyes. If they are overweight, they will have shorter lives. Don't over-feed your dog and take him for a walk every single day, and he will remain strong, healthy and satisfied.

English Labradors are calmer than American types. Gentle and friendly, they have lovely personalities and very nice characters. Their good nature and high intelligence make them so popular among children and adults equally. If you think about buying a dog, this might be your best option. Just make sure to choose really respectable breeder.
