German Shepherd - Essential Details You Ought To Know

The German Shepherd (also known as the Alsatian)
is a herding breed of dog. They have a handsome
wolf-like appearance. It was in the late 1800s
the breed is thought to have first came to be.
They were first used for protecting and herding
sheep. They are a popular choice as a family
pet, movie roles, police dogs or for search and
rescue these days. Qualities like their high
intelligence, dependability and courage are
things they can be identified by. Their breeding
lineage includes a mixture of German farm dogs
and are thought to have been created in Germany.

They're classified as a large sized breed of
dog. The recommended male guidelines are 24-26
inches tall with a weight of 75-95 pounds, while
the female guidelines are 22-24 inches high and a
weight of 60-70 pounds. They're famous for their
fearless and protective character. They can be
highly suitable as a guard dog, as they are
usually suspicious towards people they're not
familiar with. They're proven to be highly
smart, and scores 3rd in comparison with all
other breeds when being trained to understand
new commands.

They're very suitable for a family pet, as they
are great with kids. They do mix peacefully with
other pets like other dogs and cats they're
raised with. Taking care of their coat is a time
consuming task. They require a proper groom every
8 to 10 weeks, and a high amount of brushing
every day. They love to have a large yard so
they have plenty of room, but can be suitable
for living in an apartment.

Like many large sized dogs, they are by and
large shorter-lived with a life expectancy of
9-12 years. Their major health problem is hip
and elbow dysplasia, and they are also
susceptible to blood disorders, digestive
problems or eczema. They love activities like
agility, tracking running or chasing after balls
and frisbees. To reduce the risk of hyperactivity
or other bad habits, they need long walks each
day as a result of their medium level of energy.

You should be able to spend a lot of time
grooming, walking, providing mental challenges
and giving them attention if you bring home the
German Shepherd. They're perfect for active
families or anyone with a job to give them, but
not an ideal option for less active owners.
Possibly the most attractive characteristic
about this particular dog is it is a highly
intelligent and dependable breed that can fit
into almost any situation.
