Top Tips for Rabbit Care

No house is perfect without a pet. Kids love the
idea of pets because they are so lovable and
fun. It's the adults that fully grasp the
efforts involved in correctly looking after a
pet. Although small, rabbits need appropriate
care just as any other pet. Proper care entails
regular checkups with the doctor, clearing out
the cage or hutch and new food and water every
day. When you make the decision to get a rabbit
you need to know how to look after it correctly.

There are many variations of bunnies you can
purchase, each with particular characteristics
and needs. The best pets are these varieties -
lop ear rabbits, dwarf rabbits and cottontail
rabbits. Both cottontails and dwarfs will
flourish indoors. A cottontail is a bit heartier
and will live outdoors provided there is no
extreme conditions. Both the cottontail and the
loped ear rabbit will get quite large. The lop
eared is recognized by the floppy rabbit ears.
The different rabbits require different kinds of
care.

To stay healthy, your bunny needs shots and
regular checkups from your vet. Make sure you
wash right before you hold your bunny, since you
can transfer diseases to it through your hands.
Rabbits can get worms, a parasite. Your
veterinarian can easily treat this minor
problem. If you already have a vet for another
pet, make sure you speak to them about
purchasing a rabbit. They'll be able to assist
you.

A nutritious diet for rabbits includes of
rabbit food - or pellets, vegetables and hay.
Many rabbits love to munch on carrots or
lettuce. Day-to-day fresh food and water is
important to the care of your rabbit. This way
you can monitor if they are feeding correctly.
It's important to monitor what your rabbit eats,
as they will overeat and could risk becoming over
weight. Read the labeling on the food you buy.
You want to avoid rabbit feed that has nuts, as
this contains too much fiber for their
digestion. Your rabbit will love fruits. You can
give it to them once in a while, but not every
day.

There are recommended rabbit cages and hutches
for indoor use and outdoor use. The layout of
most rabbit cages enables the rabbit feces to
fall through the floor. This way your rabbit
will remain cleaner and healthier as they are
not residing in their feces. You don't want to
cramp your rabbit. They should be quite
comfortable if they can spread out, with clean
bedding, in their hutch. As described above,
rabbits have to have clean water every day. If
you have a yard, it's wonderful for your rabbit.
Let your rabbit run around, explore and exercise.

Rabbits require a clean habitat, so the hutch
must be cleaned at minimum weekly, or when it
begins to stink or look too dirty. Just like
you, your rabbit requires a fresh environment to
keep him healthy. Being conscientious in keeping
your rabbit hutch will allow your rabbit thrive.
Believe it or not, your rabbit can live up to 10
years.

Fuzzy and cuddlesome, rabbits are precious
pets. While not maintenance free, they don't
require too much care to stay healthy. Children
love to play with their rabbits and even bring
them to class for show-and-tell. No family is
complete without a pet. They supply absolute
love.
