Filters For Birds

Filtering the air for your birds is crucial if
they are to have a chance to live a long and
healthy life. Here is a discussion about 4 of
the best filters you can have, why they are
good, and what you can count on them to do.

Large Particle Pre-filter---When you see this
type of filters listed in the owner's manual or
technical specifications for a cleaner, it's as
good as money in your pocket. These filters are
made up of a cotton-ball like material and are
usually the first line of defense against
airborne particles.

It's name tells the story about the fact that it
is designed to trap the big airborne particulates
that you can see. Hair, dust, and pieces of lint
are able to be effectively eliminated and the
cost to replace this filter is generally under
$30. That means that instead of a more expensive
and finer grade filter being clogged
unnecessarily, this filter does the job in a
more cost effective way.

Medium Particle Pre-filter---This is the second
line of defense and catches those particles that
are able to go through the large particle filter.
But it stops them from filling up the more
expensive filter and allows it to be reserved
for microscopic particles.

HEPA---This is an acronym for high efficiency
particle arresting.. To be designated as such,
it must be able to remove microscopic particles.

Its efficiency is 99.97% which means that it can
eliminate 99,997 out of every 10,000 airborne
particles that are .3 microns or greater in
size; and a micron is defined as one millionth
of a meter.

This type of filtration is so great for birds
because it does not produce any ionized
particles or ozone, as the effects of both are
still being disputed by the experts. The only
by-product that HEPA filtration produces is
fresh air. Even hospitals use it of insure clean
air.

Carbon Cloth---This kind of filter offers double
benefits because of its construction. Designed by
the British Military as their answer to chemical
warfare, it will help your bird so much. Carbon
is well known for its ability to remove gaseous
pollutants. And since birds' incredibly
efficient respiratory systems make them highly
sensitive to gases and odors, this is an
excellent benefit to have. And because the
carbon is woven, it gives additional protection
against particles; all of this from a single
filter.

The combination of these 4 filters is one of the
best ways to clear the air of both gaseous and
particulate pollutants that often lead to the
early demise of pet birds. Choosing a cleaner
with this combination of filters will provide a
healthy life for your bird and you.
