A Brief Intro To Toy Dogs

By Heinz Kaufmann

There is a widespread misbelief about the German shepherd miniature puppy breed. The bloodlines of the German Shepherd are kept very clean by the reputed German Shepherd Breeders and regulating Societies. In very rare cases a German Shepherd couples with the miniature dog of a different breed but this is not the creation of a new miniature and is not the persuading of dog breeders.

Crosses between Border Collies and German Shepherds are not considered miniatures since they are not referred to as breed.

There are a lot of hybrids available for the German Shepherd dogs which include the king Shepherd and the Shiloh Shepherds along with the Shepadoodle which is a mixture of the German Shepherd and poodle.

Although miniaturization of dogs has been common German Shepherd miniature dogs are not recognized either as breeds or miniature puppies. Some of the dogs that are considered miniature are the Border Collies, Staffordshire Terriers and stumpy tail cattle dog. These are not considered as show dogs since original German Shepherds are heavy and large dogs. Thus, never believe breeders who claim that they raise miniature German Shepherds.

True shepherds are not a mixed breed and there is also unsureness about the Dwarf German Shepherd Dog. This is not a miniature version however due to different health reasons brought about by a genetic defect the dog suffers from pituitary dwarfism. This means it does not grow properly and needs regular attention and care by the veterinarian in order to survive throughout its life. Furthermore, constant attention is required to manage the condition of its coat and health. These dogs are easily distinguishable when they are born.

Dwarf German Shepherd are also prone to pannus, thyroid, poor coat and allergies. Baldness may also be a problem as they get older. Furthermore, German Shepherds suffering from the condition never exceed 30 pounds in weight. Fortunately, they still posses the character of a normal German Shepherd such as being lively and intelligent. Owners of Dwarf German Shepherd should make sure that they foster a healthy environment and provide perfect healthcare for their pet.

Many breeders denominate the actual large German Shepherd puppies as miniature German shepherd. But, this is a misconception as the dog is bound to grow up to 80 pounds in weight and that cannot be considered a miniature. A number of people have been fooled into buying the miniature German Shepherd only to discover that it is a huge problem that keeps growing until it reaches maturity.

What might have been the result of this marketing strategy? Well, dogs deserted by their owners due to the belief that they were miniatures! A large number of these dogs often end up in rescue centers since owners already found them hard to keep in their homes.

The original breed was developed in Germany by a cavalry officer from the German army known as Captain Max von Stephanitz. He has developed a golden middle that means a good temperamental dog of large size would be considered as an original and authentic German Shepherd.
