A Responsible Cavachon Breeder Brings Long Term Satisfaction

By Bernice Terry

A Cavachon breeder breeds litters to produce the low shedding coat of the good natured Bichon Frise and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This hybrid was bred for the first time in 1996. The parent breeds have a long history of being beloved companions of their human owners.

Although a mix a designer dog breed is a deliberate creation to produce choice traits. The breeding of a Bichon indicates its low shedding coat is a key desired characteristic. A cross breed is generally more healthy as it has a less depleted gene pool than a pure breed.

English aristocracy has prized Cavaliers as household companions. According to records, they came to America in 1956. A Cavalier is a toy dog with a reputation of being gentle and sweet natured. This active breed loves to please its owners. This is not an aggressive species.

A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a coat of four primary color variations. There is a chestnut Ruby tone. Another variation is the Blenheim mix of a chestnut tone separated by white hair. There is a Tricolor variation, which has a black and white combination in the main with some tan markings. A Black and Tan is jet black with tan markings. The silky hair tends to wave rather than curl. This small canine is typically no higher than 13 inches high and no heavier than 18 pounds in weight.

The Bichon Frise is an active small and muscular toy breed with a plumed tail. It has a friendly disposition also. It typical weight is around 11 lbs and height is around 12 inches. It is descended from Water Spaniels and Poodles in some combination. Spanish sailors enjoyed its companionship on their boats. Later, French royalty developed a liking for this friendly and affectionate species. Its dark eyes have a curious look that will be noticeable in Cavachons. The coat has 2 layers. The top layer is tightly curled with a rough texture. The undercoat is silky. The color is white, but cream, apricot and buff coloring may be seen in some parts of the body and on the ears. This is an active breed that needs to be exercised.

Cavachons are typically between 10 and 15 inches in height. They are usually between 10 and 25 lbs in weight. As hybrids height and weight dimensions may vary, but the difference will not be significant. Color will vary. There will be more variance than as with Bichons as the Cavalier has a range of color combinations.

Typical shades are tan, sable, white, black or a mix of the same. The hair is normally silky in texture with a wavy and loose quality more reminiscent of the Cavalier. But, the coat should have the low shedding trait of their French named ancestor and they will share the same appealing eyes. Life expectancy will be similar to that of the parent breeds, usually between ten and twelve years. . First generation crosses more reliably possess the low shedding trait of the Bichon Frise coat.

Expect to see shedding as puppy hair is replaced for adult hair. Combing is needed to avoid tangles. More frequent combing will mean less tangles and less time spent on this chore. Pet owners will find that a metal comb is an efficient untangling tool. Do not leave this pet alone for long. A responsible Cavachon breeder will provide you with a puppy you will be thankful for.
