The first Ragdoll kittens appeared in the 1960's, when a woman named Ann Baker observed the unique litter produced from a pairing a female Persian Angora cat with both a Birman and Burmese male. The resulting offspring had intense blue eyes, a larger body, and long, non-matting fur. She then continued to breed these kittens to produce more with this special look.

These cats are mostly born completely white, with their full colors not showing until they are about two or three years old. Sterilized males weigh 15 to 25 pounds, and spayed females weigh 12 to 15 pounds. They have a larger body with a round face, most noted for its wide-set eyes of vivid blue. Their fur is similar to that of a rabbit, with longer plumes on the tail and legs. A Ragdoll's coat is "point-marked", with a darker color on the face, legs, ears, and tail. Point colors may be lilac, red, seal, blue, cream, or chocolate, in one of 19 patterns.

Loving, loyal, and affectionate, these cats are gentle and don't fight, which is why they must be kept indoors. They are very quick learners who enjoy playing and love to interact with their owners, not one to scratch, they are good playmates for children. These cats are called "Ragdolls" because of their tendency to go limp in the arms of their human masters, resembling a rag doll.

The cat's long, silken fur will need to be gently brushed at least twice a week even though it does not mat easily. Cleaning the cat's teeth regularly is important too. Also, their ears should be cleaned every week with a product designed for this purpose.

Once a kitten is at least one month old, it can start eating solid food. A dry kibble which has been formulated to meet the nutritional needs of young cats with the right amount of fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals is the best choice. Veterinarians can recommend a quality cat food.

Generally they are healthy and may live as long as twelve years, or more. The most common threats to their health are feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a heart disease, and hip dysplasia. It is important to take the cat to the veterinarian at least annually for a routine check-up including screening for these disorders. Fortunately if caught early, both of these issues may respond to antioxidant therapy.

This type of cat loves human attention more than anything and needs it to be happy. They will wait with anticipation for their owner to return home and look forward to a belly rub or chin scratching. At night they almost always sleep with their masters. It's always important before buying Ragdoll kittens for sale California cat lovers first ensure they can give them plenty of love and attention.
