Distinguishing The English Labradors From The American Labradors

By Amanda Baird

American labs and English labradors may have almost the same appearance on the outside, but there are a lot of distinguishing marks that are not really noticed by some. Generally, labradors is a breed of dogs. However, the labs have two types: the English or Show, or the American or Field. Both of them are really loyal and handsome-looking dogs. However, more and more people today start to learn about these difference to enable them to make a better decision in choosing a lab.

The English lab originally came from England. They are also called the 'show' or 'bench' labradors since they were originally bred for show. Their other name is 'Conformation Labradors'. These labs are considered as medium-sized breeds, with their heights at around 21 to 24 inches. The males can grow up to around 90 pounds, and the females at around 70lbs. They are known to have thick bodies.

Standing at around 27 to 30 inches, the American labrador is considered to be a tall dog. They have a huge amount of energy, as opposed with the English. They were mainly bred for being in the field, and can last for a whole day of playing or working.

English labradors are considered to be better family pets than the American labs because they have high energies. The thick body of the Conformation lab make up for their height. They also have different coat colours, like yellow or gold, chocolate brown, and solid black.

Field bred labradors are more appropriate for the hunters or field enthusiasts because of their massive amount of energy. Their bodies are thinner and their coats are not as thick as the Show labs. Their tails are also sometimes curled upwards. In addition, the American lab's strong drive makes it a challenging pet, because it needs a lot of vigorous exercise in a day to keep up. On the other hand, English labradors tend to be more laid-back, although they would also need around 30 to 45 minutes a day to exercise.

The English lab is a mellow dog. They are able to learn how to live properly in the house or outdoors. They do not have the drive of the field labs, but they would be happy to play fetch or ball, as well as they would be happy to just sleep inside the house. Because of this, the Conformation labrador is one of the topmost choices as guide dogs in Canada and the United States.

Picking the perfect lab for you, or for your whole family, is crucial. Each dog has its own needs and may be distinct from the other labrador type. They both make great companions and pet dogs, but their different energy levels make them very different from each other. Their heights and coat difference may also be considered. Thicker coats typically need more grooming time, as opposed to the American lab. Shedding may also be a problem. Thus, a future labrador owner must always remember these distinctions.

The perfect dog is a match for your kind of life. Even if you choose English labradors or American labradors, they would both be more than happy to consider you as a part of their packs.
