Reputable Silver Labrador Breeders Are Not Difficult To Find

By Dale Peck

One of the world's best loved dog breeds is the Labrador retriever. Although silver-colored Labradors and charcoal labs are breeds associated with a certain amount of controversy, they have increased in popularity over the past ten years. Fortunately, reputable Silver Labrador breeders are not hard to find.

Labradors were originally bred in Newfoundland, Canada, where their primary role was assisting fishermen to pull large catches into their boats from the icy water. From there, these canines were taken to England, where pet owners further honed their retrieving instincts. Now a favorite among many individuals in search of a family pet, such dogs are typically characterized by their loyalty to their masters and their gentle dispositions.

As previously mentioned, a certain amount of controversy surrounds such labs. The American Kennel Club does not regard such labs as pure breeds the way they do traditional lab colors, such as yellow, black, and chocolate. However, many pet owners and breeders do not regard this disqualification with any seriousness. They claim the dog's lineage is proof of its status as a pure breed.

The people who argue that such Labradors are not pure breeds base this on the assumption that they are a cross between standard Labradors and Weimaraner dogs. In 2002, however, DNA tests were conducted that offered substantial proof of the dog's purebred status. Unfortunately, some consumers and breeders have ignored these test results.

No matter how much controversy surrounds these dogs, it is obvious that their characteristics distinctly set them apart from other canine breeds. For example, they have short, stiff, water resistant coats. In addition, they are very muscular, with wide muzzles and broad heads. Essentially all labs, regardless of the color, have pendant shaped, dangling ears.

The tail of the Labrador is sometimes compared to that of an otter. This is because it is broad at the base where it attaches to the canine's body, and then tapers to a fine point at the end. Labradors are natural swimmers, and have feet that are somewhat webbed, which helps them with this task. Most silver Labradors have pale yellow eyes and gray noses and paw pads.

Because they are so popular, many breeders specialize in raising such labs. For this reason, it is not difficult to find trustworthy breeders in most parts of the country. However, it is important to avoid doing business with a person that one suspects is simply running a puppy mill. Visiting the location where the dogs are raised is always in the pet owner's best interest, as this way he or she can make sure that it is a reputable business. It is never wise to agree to meet a breeder in a different location in order to purchase a dog, as this may be a sign that the breeder is ashamed of the conditions of his or her breeding facility.

Those who choose to buy dogs of this type should be diligent in their search for responsible Silver Labrador breeders who run their kennels in an orderly and clean manner. In addition, asking to see the paperwork for any dog one is considering is a good idea. Ultimately, those who acquire such dogs will discover that they make an ideal addition to any household.
