Saluki Dog Is One Of The Oldest Breeds

By Helene Norris

Gentle and graceful, Saluki dog is probably the oldest dog breed. There are some evidences that he was appreciated even by Egyptians, and they even were allowed to enter Bedouin's tents. He looks similar to a greyhound, but with longer and thinner body and legs. This dog is designed for fast, long running, for chasing and hunting. Sometimes lazy, he still needs to spend at least 40 minutes running every single day.

This breed is bred to hunt hares and gazelles. Females are about 24 inches high, and have 35-45 pounds. Males are slightly larger and can reach 65 pounds and 28 inches. Their live ten to fifteen years, and it depends mostly on the quality of their diet and genetic predisposition. In order to stay healthy, he has to have the opportunity to run to his limits at least once a day.

Food can really be a problem. With other breeds, you would probably have to be careful not to feed them too much. With this one, you will be happy if he eats at all. They are so picky about their food and eat so little that they might look like no one is feeding them.

Saluki comes in many different styles, and all varieties are allowed. Its coat can be white, fawn, cream, grizzle, red, black and tan or chocolate and tan, even as tricolor. All combinations of colors on white coat are allowed. Its hair can be short and soft, straight and flat and long on some areas, including ears and tail. They are mostly recognized as smooth and feathered variety, but they were often bred together.

This breed does not drool much, rarely barks and only sometimes snore, and is content to lounge for hours. It adores digging and running, and it just cannot be controlled sometimes. Anyway, it has quite moderate attention and grooming needs. It is very gentle with children, and very loyal. These silent dogs are good watchdogs, but no bodyguards.

Saluki is a quiet and dignified dog, gentle and good-natured. Sometimes shy and distrustful of other people, but he is doing fine with other dogs. Sometimes it is stubborn and willful, and may not respond to your calls. If you do not have a fenced yard, do not let it unattended, because they are not afraid of cars.

This breed has a lovely, aristocratic had with feathered, hanging ears. Both variations have long and hanging ears and long and graceful bodies and tails. The coat has to be very silky and soft in both types, and feathered type also has longer hair on its ears, legs and tails. Smooth variant is highly appreciated on dog shows, and it is quite rare. They can be bred together.

Saluki dog moves gracefully and behaves nicely. This is an intelligent breed, gentle and polite, but a real hunter by its nature. It can be very nice family dog, loyal and obedient, as long as it has an opportunity to run on daily basis. They don't require too much grooming, regular combing and brushing will keep their soft coats and feathering tidy.
