If you're looking for a toy breed, adaptable Mi-Ki puppies are a perfect fit for just about any home. They're calm, intelligent, sweet, and affectionate. They love walks but can easily be exercised with toys and games in a yard and in the home, making this little guy a suitable companion for the elderly and the handicapped. Maureen Westburg of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is generally given credit as the developer of the breed, but she didn't keep detailed records. It's believed to be a descendant of the Papillon, Maltese, and Japanese Chin. There may also be some mixing with the Shih Tzu and/or the Yorkshire Terrier.
Expect to enjoy this delightful little companion for up to 16 years. This is a healthy breed with no significant genetic issues. Ask for OFA certification to avoid unexpected problems with patella luxation (knee cap slips out of position). Short muzzled dogs sometimes develop respiratory problems in their old age. Keeping the muzzle shaved and clean, and keeping their teeth clean reduces the incidence of respiratory problems.
Adult dogs weigh 4-10 pounds. They can have a long or smooth coat. Any color is acceptable. Most will change color twice, around the first birthday, and again around the 2nd birthday. The muzzle is short, eyes large and round. Feathered ears can be drooped or erect. The plumed tail is medium in length and is carried over the back.
Although not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by the States Kennel Club. Several clubs and registries have been formed to formalize standards, promote health and success of the breed, and advocate for breed recognition from the AKC. The IMR, International Mi-Ki Registry, has established a breeding program with strict requirements including DNA testing. Another club that has developed breeding standards and established a registry is Mi-Ki Breeders USA.
