Knowing More About Ear Cropping

By Catalina Nielsen

For quite a long time now, most animals have had to undergo ear cropping. This is a tradition that has been there since the olden days and persists up to today. The only difference is that nowadays only dogs undergo it and there is use of anesthesia. It is basically an activity of removal of a part of the floppy part of ears for them to position straight.

It is done by the vets using anesthesia and cutting blades. Once done, they are bandaged and supported uprights for them to heal that way. Changing of these bandages has to be done on a daily basis so as to avoid the cuts from contracting infections. The healing process takes four to eight days. This is the general time frame although; some tend to heal faster depending on the breed they are from.

The most targeted dogs are the puppies of an age between eight to twelve weeks old. These ones are preferred because they heal quickly and are easy to manage in dressing the wounds. Besides, these ones do not catch infections at all since they do not scratch on the affected parts any how in comparison to the older dogs.

The most important thing after the surgery is to ensure that the ears remain intact for the healing process to take effect in a smooth manner. The owner has to be on the lookout to prevent them from scratching. In case this happens, the puppies end up contracting infections and it is just another complication to deal with. It creates hurting and uneasiness to the dog.

Cases of ears remaining fallen even after healing have been reported as of late. This happens when the right process of treating and dressing the wounds were not accomplished and the animal did contract an infection. Where everything went okay, it becomes just a matter of time for them to be up and standing. The owner just needs to exercise faith.

A number of reasons exist in trying to explain the essence of this process. Some people believe that with ever erect ears, the dogs will have a clear sense of listening to anything going on from far. As of such, they can pinpoint an important sound and alert the nearby people. This is the common reason for dogs whose main aim is protecting property in homes.

Motive number two is because of filthy growths. When this happens, it is hard to remove this dirt. In this regard, it creates a good breeding ground for parasites and other infections. When cropped, they stand tall and this is a preventive measure to such. This is due to the fact that they lack the floppy part to cover over them.

All these reasons lack scientific approval hence; nobody knows if they are true or not. On this basis, animal activists have come out strongly to advocate against ear cropping. According to them, it is unconstitutional, painful and does not concur with the rights of animals at all. This campaign is still on going up to today.
