What Are Basic Pet Sitting Rates And Duties

By Rhea Solomon

There are many things you must consider when determining basic and fair pet sitting rates and duties. You must decide if daily stop ins will work or if an overnight pet sitter is necessary. To be sure there is a major difference in the rates you will be paying.

The person you hire must be capable of providing the basics of care such as food, water, exercise and playtime. They should also bring in mail and newspapers and water your plants. This is considered light housekeeping and is included in the basic package.

The cost for daily sitting ranges from ten and twenty dollars per day. The normal charge will be around fourteen dollars a day. With two stops a day your dog will feel less lonely and abandoned. An added advantage is that they will appear to be staying in the home while you are gone.

Factors that mitigate this rate are varied. If there is more than one pet to be cared for the price may increase by a dollar or more per visit. If the pet is a cat the rate may go down by a small amount. If you are a plan ahead type of person who stops mail and newspapers so that no housekeeping is necessary then you can deduct up to two dollars a day. When going away for holidays you can count on an extra five dollars a day being added to your costs.

When you need to have your dog walked because of where you live the walk is extra. The walk will usually last up to an hour and can cost fifteen dollars or more per walk. Dogs generally need to be walked a minimum of twice during the day.

When considering overnight sitters cost will be a major factor. The rate can vary between forty and eighty dollars a day. The average overnight sitter charges about sixty dollars a day. Volume of care needed and whether or not your pet can be alone for twenty hours at a time will be determining factors when you make your choice between overnight or daily stop in pet sitting.

Overnight sitters offer things that day to day sitters cannot. They help to keep the stress level of any pet lower. They can adjust to the schedules of your pet as far as meals and walks and exercise. The animals are in their own environment, around the familiar sights, sounds and smells that mean home. They are available to monitor the health and well being of your precious pet. If there is an emergency someone is there to handle it and administer medications if necessary. An added plus is that the house is not empty except for your dog or cat.

When comparing these two services you may have a difficult time deciding. Price is one determining factor in this process. Another factor will be the level of care and attention you expect for the dog or cat. The daily sitter will cost about one hundred forty dollars for a seven day period. The overnight will be about four hundred dollars. The added care and attention may well be worth the extra cost of the pet sitting rates you choose. Only you can make that decision.
