How Jasper TX Diabetic Alert Dogs Aid Children Suffering With Autism

By Clyde Banosia

Jasper diabetic dogs are taught to identify unsafe blood glucose levels in children and alert a responsible adult. These highly intelligent animals can also be socialized and trained to support autistic children and their parents. They help children cope in unfamiliar circumstances, bring balance to intense situations and provide assistance as needed.

An autistic child lives in a world of confusing and frightening stimuli. Service dogs provide a steady focus amongst the ever changing sights and sounds. They communicate with consistent messages, obey simple rules and stick to routines. They stay calm in hectic surroundings, helping to soothe anxiety.

A service dog allows a parent to visit public places with their autistic child and accomplish ordinary tasks. The constant presence of the dog increases the child's sense of security, decreases stress and reduces the incidence of inappropriate or disruptive behaviors. The child can also be harnessed to the dog to prevent bolting.

An autism assistance dog can compensate for poor auditory and visual processing skills by alerting a child to sounds and sights that require immediate attention. It can lead a disoriented child back home. It can also be taught to calm down an over-stimulated child by using its body to apply comforting pressure.

Service dogs begin their training as young puppies. The service animals are exposed to a variety of public situations and desensitized to background noises to ensure that they are not distracted from their duties. They are taught a series of obedience commands in addition to specific skills to help the diabetic or autistic child.

Jasper diabetic dogs complete their training around the age of nine months. During most of their period, they are housed in a pen containing items of clothing worn by the child who will become their handler. When they are relocated and meet the youngster, the scent familiarity helps to form a strong and lasting bond.
