The Upside To Military Dog Adoption

By Marissa Velazquez

Many may think that owning a military dog is just a pipedream. This is not the case in reality; one can actually own a retired one and have fun with the well trained canine. Instead of buying yourself or your kid a dog or a puppy, you can consider the military dog adoption that even if strict, has its benefits in the long run.

Adoption is quite inexpensive if you compare it to buying and bringing up a puppy. When you adopt, you save the life of that dog and keep them from being euthanized. Observing the traits of an adult dog is much easier compared to that of a puppy as they have developed fully. You may get a sweet looking puppy only for it to develop into a dog with very queer characteristics.

One does not need to take the dog through house training since they have undergone extensive training and are good with taking instructions from the owner. They are well trained on obedience, chewing, hyperactivity among other skills. They in general mix well with children and chances of the kids being harmed are minimal.

In general, the entire process is much cheaper compared to buying a puppy and raising it. You don't have to incur enormous veterinary cost associated with raising a dog. For those who have checked the prices of good quality dogs like the ones in military, many cannot afford them.

Military dogs even when retired are still valuable and the foster home will receive lifetime support for the dog. These may include free consultations with specific behavioral problems. They can even participate in social events for the new owners and the pets. They also get special rates veterinary services.

It is comparatively easy to adopt if one looks at the cost of raring a dog from zero. Adopting them minimizes the chances of them being killed for population control. This way you save them from the cruelty of being killed and you also get a friend who has been well trained.

It is very easy to go through the process of adopting these military dogs. Since 200 when the law was passed allowing the military dogs to be adopted, many have found loving homes after retiring. The individual just have to show their capability to take care of the dog well since they are very sensitive and have to be handled with care. As long as one can show past experience in handling such special dog like search and rescue or police dogs, your chances or getting the approval are high.

Prepare to fill relevant adoption papers and put in mind the government is not responsible for what happens to you after you take the dog. Some may be left aggressive due to the experience in service. You must agree not to hold the government liable for any harm afterwards. Those who have training in dog handling are much more likely to be approved for the military dog adoption. If you have worked in any law enforcement agency and are friendly to dogs, you also have better chances of getting to adopt a retired military dog.
