Expand Your Family With Collie Puppies For Sale In PA

By Essie Osborn

An easy way to enrich your life is to get a dog. Dogs make loyal friends and their antics will entertain you every day. The kids will love a dog to play with or to snuggle up against on cold nights and caring for one will help teach them about responsibility. If you already have other pets, it's best to get a puppy because they're easier to integrate into the household. In the eastern parts of the USA, it's well worth looking into collie puppies for sale in PA.

The collie is a famous type of herding dog. It originally came from the British Isles, where it was used especially to herd sheep. This is why many people refer to the type of dog as a sheepdog. However, the dogs were also used as cattle drovers, especially in Scotland and the northern parts of England.

There isn't just one collie breed but several types that belong to this family of dogs. In the British Isles there are for instance the Shetland sheepdog, the Welsh sheepdog, the old English sheepdog and the popular border collie with its black and white coat. Australian varieties include the Australian cattle dog and the kelpie. In New Zealand there is the New Zealand eye dog and the USA has the McNab shepherd.

Collies became especially popular in the 19th century because Queen Victoria loved these dogs. Another famous collie owner was President Lyndon Johnson, whose dog was called Blanco. If asked to name famous collies, most people would probably mention Lassie, the fictional dog that was the star of several films and TV shows.

Lassie was a long-haired or rough collie. This breed usually has a coat in shades of brown and white but can also be a mottled gray in color. It is a beautiful furry dog that looks as if it could be closely related to a wolf.

Lassie's temperament was typical of most collies. They're intensely loyal and intelligent, but can also be trained with ease. Their gentle character makes them ideal as family dogs and as playmates for children. They're energetic and love exercise. This is especially true of border collies, which are best suited to an owner who is very active or who lives on a farm.

Their long hair may make you want to think twice about collies but they actually don't demand lots of special care. It's normally sufficient to brush them once a week and they're very clean, so they don't have a strong odor. You'll need to give them plenty of exercise though, so they'll need to be walked every day. This will help if they have too much energy and it will also keep them fit and in good physical condition. Moreover, it will help you stay in shape too.

While it's easy to find collies in the PA classifieds or online, it's best to look for breeders through the American Kennel Club or another breeders' association. In this way you can avoid unethical puppy mills and you'll be sure to find a dog with a great pedigree. This is especially important if you're planning to use the animal as a show dog. If you only want a family dog, you may also consider visiting an animal shelter and adopting a rescue dog with collie characteristics.
