Locating Dog Obedience Lessons In Houston TX

By Essie Osborn

Purchasing a dog is a big step in most people's lives. Most new pet owners do not know how to train their animals in a way that allows them to be good obedient citizens in the neighborhood. Dog obedience lessons are the answer to this problem and in Houston TX there are many to choose from.

With the proper training your new companion will know what you need him to do by word, body language or hand signals. It is easy to allow bad habits to appear in dogs. If you are inconsistent in directing or punish him to harshly you may create a pet that is out of control. Rather than remove the animal from your home you may want to have him trained instead.

Trainers can be found in pet stores everywhere. They advertise their skills on bulletin boards and most of the larger stores offer training by employees in the stores during the week. There are a couple of places near Houston that offer schools for dogs and board them while they are being trained. Other options are the SPCA and private individuals who train them either at your home or theirs. Most trainers will require that the owner work with their dog during the entire course of classes.

One of the main points of any training program is constant reinforcement of wanted behaviors. By having the dogs repeat the same action in the same way repeatedly the task is embedded in their memory. Positive reinforcement can come in the form of treats or praise when the task is completed correctly. What the trainer must emphasize to the owner is consistent leadership from the humans in the dogs life.

Once the basics are learned you can expect your pets to know how to greet visitors, sit and stay, associate with other animals calmly and loose leash walk. There are extended classes that will further the dogs training all the way to competitions for agility. These competitions are the ultimate test of an obedient animal.

Before your dog can enter the advanced classes it must complete the first round successfully. After the initial classes it will be easier to teach him the new tasks. You may find that the more training he receives the happier he is. You will absolutely be more welcome when you go visiting with him when he is well behaved.

Many of these courses include protection classes like the ones used when businesses and individuals need guards. These courses teach the dogs to be protective while maintaining their social skills. You may also benefit from this training in that they will be far less apt to bit from fear and that can save you a lot of legal and financial problems. Another available type of training is for companion animals for elderly or disabled persons.

An obedient animal is a pleasure to be around for everyone. Training them takes dedication and time from the owner as well as the trainer. Some people start the lessons when the puppy is eight weeks old to ensure proper behaviors are learned. Adult dogs can also be trained to be good companions and housemates. The old saying about teaching old dogs new tricks is a common misconception that needs to change. The change may come with well trained dogs becoming the norm rather than the exception.
