Useful Products For Dog Owners

By Garrett McMahan

Pet stores, both virtual and storefront, are filled with amazing products that entice dog owners. Clever marketing and packaging sucks us in and we buy, buy, buy everything from fancy collars to strollers for our canine companions. While a lot of products are more gimmick than reality based, here are a few products that definitely can make life better for your dog.

Of all the things you can do for your pet, aside from feeding and proper veterinary care, proper dog training is one of the best. With The Dog's Way, a comprehensive set of 12 lessons on five DVDs, you can learn how to train a dog on a leash, teach basic commands and helpful skills such as obeying temporary and permanent boundaries. These well-organized obedience training DVDs make dog training easy and fun, it just takes a little bit of patience and a few weeks to achieve amazing results. The set also includes a workbook that has pages to correspond with each lesson and a set of reminder cards that you can carry along with you on a walk.

People often tote their dogs around with them as they run errands or pick up the kids from school, and many dogs love riding in the car. However, this can be a dangerous situation because dogs easily can distract a driver from the road and put themselves and others in jeopardy. One gift idea would be to purchase some type of doggie car seat or restraint system that helps keep a pet in one place during the car ride, just like you would with your child. Most doggie seat belts will not really protect your dog if you do get into a collision but they can prevent accidents simply by controlling the dog itself. The Sleepypod system has been shown to be effective in a collision, so you might consider buying one of their restraints.

You might have noticed that dogs really like to nap. They will sleep anywhere - on the stairs, on your lap, on a comfortable chair or under the covers with their head gently resting on a down pillow. Dogs also generally love their dog beds and these can be a great, and attractive, gift for a pet or a pet owner. There are thousands of amazing pet beds out there on the market, from contemporary beds to rustic beds that would look right at home in a hunting lodge.

Dogs love to nap and they love to eat, and their eating space should be just as stylish as their cozy bed. Providing a beautiful set of pet dishes can be an excellent gift. You can even pair it up with a lovely, washable mat to catch spills. You need a dish large enough to accommodate the size of the dog. A larger dog will need a larger bowl simply because they drink and eat more than a smaller dog. It's usually best to purchase either stainless steel or ceramic bowls as dogs might chew on a plastic bowl and could swallow a piece of plastic.

If you are selecting a gift for a dog, you might think that because a dog already has a leash and collar that they don't need another set. Humans typically have more than one pair of shoes and tons of clothes, but why shouldn't a dog be treated to a variety of different collars and leashes? Perhaps a dog needs a set for each season or a special fancy leash for certain occasions. Just make sure to purchase the highest quality leash, collar or harness that you can afford and make sure you know what size to buy so that the items are comfortable and safe.
