Basic Pet Supplies For First-Time Owners

By Karen Thomas

Being a pet owner can be very exciting, but also quite daunting if it's the first time. Caring for a living creature is the closest thing to having a child, many have said, and it's actually a very good way to practice taking responsibility in preparation for parenthood! Here are some basic tips on pet supplies that every owner should consider in preparation for the newest family member.

One can safely assume that all necessary background checks have been done on the animal in question before it arrives at its new home. This includes knowing more about its particular breed or species, and any special needs it may have as a result. For example, some dogs are used to cooler climates and won't last outdoors in, say, a tropical country. Therefore, an air-conditioned home is a must.

It's necessary to do the research on the background of a particular animal in order to get the right supplies to take care of it. Certain pets require more grooming attention than others, while some animals' dietary needs should be a priority above all else. This will also help when it comes to budgeting expenses for a pet.

All pets will need three basic things: somewhere to sleep, somewhere to relieve themselves and, of course, food. Making a pet as comfortable as they can be from the very beginning will lessen the shock of being in a new home. Designate a specific place for the pet to go to the bathroom for consistent toilet training.

Provide ample padding for cats and dogs to be able to dig in and settle. Puppies are known to be quite needy when they first enter the home, so a comfortable sleeping spot, perhaps with comforting sounds or at the foot of the bed, if possible, will make the transition easier. Cats like to 'make their beds', so layering up a blanket or two will help.

Birds will need lots of room to open their wings. That being said, all animals should get a good space in which to move around and exercise. If you have no yard, then you will definitely need to invest in a collar and a leash, or even a harness, especially for dogs. You will need to walk your dog once a day at least to give it the exercise it needs.

Close attention should be paid to what foods a pet needs. Food for pets can be purchased in bulk, but must be stored well so that it remains fresh. Pet containers can be personalized, and heavier bowls for water and food should be used for larger animals.

Pets also need to be entertained, particularly if they are going to be left for long periods of time, such as during the day when the owners are at work or at school. Toys are not only fun; they actually help with developing and maintaining certain skills as the animal grows. Nowadays, there are toys designed to assist with the grooming process or even to help keep pets healthy when they play with them.
